Encourage Inspiration: Look at amazing artwork

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Encourage Inspiration is a series of posts dedicated to sharing practices that help foster creativity & inspiration.

ShivaTRONAnother way to find inspiration is to look at work that was obviously inspired. Whenever I am in need of some creative flow, I head on over to the PodCollective, an art collective I am honored to be a part of. In the gallery section, you can browse through quite a few amazing artists work.

There are plenty of other great places to see great artwork online. I’ve collected a few more for you here:

Encourage Inspiration: Walk at half speed

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Encourage Inspiration is a series of posts dedicated to sharing practices that help foster creativity & inspiration.

Walk slowlyWe all do it, rushing off in a hurry everywhere we go. Time is money, they say, but they’re wrong! Take your time as you walk throughout your day. Doesn’t matter how far you are going, just walk at half speed.

This will do all kinds of great things for you, but most importantly, it will force you to notice the things around you. Maybe its the amazing pattern you see in all of the plants, or the way that water always takes the path of least resistance. Either way, you’ll be glad you paid attention. Plus, you get to spend more time away from your desk, without taking any extra breaks!

Encourage Inspiration: Re-arrange your spaces

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Encourage Inspiration is a series dedicated to practices that help foster creativity & inspiration.

The Art Of PlacementOne of the easiest & fastest ways to make your workspace feel like a creative hotspot, is to organize and re-arrange everything! When the energy is clean and flows easily around everything, it’s more likely to express itself in your work!

Check into Feng Shui, also known as the Art of Placement. There are some basic aesthetic rules which, by following,  help make your room just feel very comfortable and creative.

First things first, grab a big trash bag, and toss everything that adds to the clutter or isn’t used anymore. Minimalism is something that I feel adds to the creative vibe in whatever you do. The more you can do with less, the better off you are.

Next, dust & wipe down everything, re-arrange your furniture, and vacuum! Doesn’t that just make you feel like you’re ready to nail that awesome project now?

For extra points, grab some Nag Champa incense.

Encourage Inspiration: Fresh Music

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Encourage Inspiration is a series dedicated to practices that help foster creativity & inspiration.

Grateful DeadYou can’t expect to find inspiration if the soundtrack to your life is dull. You need to find the music that makes your soul scream out with joy. Only then will you feel complete, and never lack in inspiration.

There are plenty of tools online to help you find music you like. You do, however, need to have some idea of what you’re looking for.

Looking at the Similar Artists section on the Last.fm page for musicians you enjoy.

Try Pandora.com. You put genre’s or artist you like in, and it creates a custom radio station just for you. You can rate songs with a thumbs up or down, which then refines the station to be an even more perfect fit. This is how I’ve found lots of my favorite artists.

I say it all the time, but “Get out to a music festival!” Hop on Jambase.com/festivals, and look in your area. There has to be some sort of multi-genre fest going on within driving range. I make it a point to check out artists I’ve never heard of at festivals, they often turn out to be my next favorite band!

Once you have some awesome music to listen to, try GrooveShark, a free service that allows you to create & save playlists of almost any music you can think of!

The matrix of all matter

Atom & Eve

As a man who has devoted his whole life to the most clear headed science, to the study of matter, I can tell you as a result of my research about atoms this much: There is no matter as such. All matter originates and exists only by virtue of a force which brings the particle of an atom to vibration and holds this most minute solar system of the atom together. We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscious and intelligent mind. This mind is the matrix of all matter.

-Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck
(23 April 1858 – 4 October 1947)
One of the most important German physicists of the late 19th and early 20th century, winning the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918; he is considered to be the inventor of quantum theory.

Encourage Inspiration: Fresh Journeys

InspirationAs I prepare to release my book, The Art of Creativity, I want to start putting more creativity & inspiration related posts up on the blog. Over the next few weeks, I will be posting a series of posts called “Encourage Inspiration”, which will each include a technique that I use to help encourage Inspiration & Creativity.

The first technique is called Fresh Journeys. I hope it helps you as much as it’s helped me!

Fresh Journeys

One thing I like to do, is take a different path to work every day. This helps to keep out of your routines, where things repeat over and over until you zone them out and don’t even see the beauty around you.

As you change up your environment, you get your creative mind working. It likes new experiences.
Give it a shot, try a different walk to work every day, doesn’t matter if it’s just one street over. I bet you start to notice lots of inspiring things all around you.
